So, plugin development has always been an interest of mine. A few years ago I began learning the basics of java and js on CodeAcademy. I then took a break from gaming for a while, I came back and began learning with the MineAcademy course from kangarko. I’d like to finish the course, for fun, but I’d also like to make money from commissions eventually. I want to know if Minecraft Plugin Development is still worth investing time into in 2021. Will I get a stable amount of commissions? Is the development community over saturated?

There are a lot of developers here but most of them are usually inexperienced and don't actually understand Java. As long as you show proof of your knowledge, you should be able to get clients who will pay around $15-$50 for basic plugins and $100+ for complex ones.

If you are looking to just make profit, MC dev (on here) is not for you since most people who own small MC servers won't be paying much. I'd just gain enough experience and build a large portfolio to get a job at a server such as Hypixel, or some other large network.

I started out with courses to learn. IMHO they don't teach you anything unless you know Java already. Even then, it's minimal. I recommend learning what you can on your own. It's rare to find people or projects that will allow you to profit. My advice is always see what projects YOU can do. Whether that be selling a plugin or starting your own server (from scratch or assisting someone you know). I'm struggling to find an actual job because I landed myself here. Most people don't see this as "experience," especially without a degree. If you're wondering whether you could advance your programming down the road with knowing Spigot, I say you'd need to seriously think about what projects you could start and make the most of it. If you have the right mindset, go for it. It's a bit of a struggle at first but if it makes you happy, do it!

Im not a plugin developer but think about it: There were 126 milions of Minecraft players in 2020 and that number still grows. Even if we assume that only 0.01% makes new servers actively that's still 12600 people which is big freaking market.

https://www.tebex.io/ claims "We've helped creators earn over half a billion dollars using our monetization platform" and as Minecraft is biggest game they offer I can tell that minecraft servers are a big chunk of those money.

And im still suprised by how much money some servers pay me to get website done. I assume for plugin developers its same stuff you just have to be really good at what you do, so that way you don't get those servers that have budget limited by 14 year old owner pocket money

if you're old enough then thats not the right thing to do probably
you will get way more money in other stuff (in short: if you're young do it)
