So yeah, I might be building a dedicated server soon for fun, not to really host a server, and I was wondering is it any different than a custom PC build with really good specs? How does it work? Please PM me if you can help me out with some stuff.

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

Most server motherboards have 2 CPU slots (at least from what i've seen) but that's about it. Maybe more RAM slots than normal.

Other than that, it's not MUCH different other than if you want to have hard RAID arrays.

Server's are meant to be extremely reliable, with failover PSU's, A stupid amount of fans incase one or two or three stop working, a redundant raid array (Like raid 1 or raid 10), failover network ports, ECC Ram if you wanna be fancy, etc.
That too.

So it's basically a beefed up PC sent to a datacenter? Somewhere I just read said you can run a nice one on a beefed up PC but if you want 99% uptime and all build a dedicated machine what ever those are?

You want to build just a server or an entire rack? (Firewall, switch, etc)

Servers generally contain upwards of 32 GB of ram for the SUPER low-end ones. As Spiro said above, they're meant to be reliable. The structure of a server may be semi-similar to a PC, but there are many other factors, like extra fans, Battery Backups, and much much more.

The server cpu's and pc cpu's are different because of the pins, they normaly have 2 power supply's (1 psu from one electric supplier and another from a different electric supplier incase a power cut for one of the supplyers, thats what zare does) 95% of all servers use ecc ram incase theres a error it can correct it, the downside of ecc is that its slower than pc ram, most of the servers are blade witch is 4.4cm tall so they can stack 12 of them and it will be the hight of a small pc (to save space).[DOUBLEPOST=1471213716][/DOUBLEPOST]
The amount of RAM isn't really something you put a generalization on. You can have as little as 1GB in some cases (Maybe something small like an NTP server?) and even up to 1TB+.
1tb ram for ram disks (hard a hard drive witch can go at 16+ GBPS)
