1000px is always a good place to start as for your width. It's also good to take into account primarily, where you're going to post it. So definitely if the background of the website/forum you're posting it uses a white background, you may want to go a darker shade of white or a dark color, same goes for the black background, a lighter shade of black or a darker shade of it. Unless you're specifically intending it to look as though it's transparent by using the same background color.

One of the things I also like doing is looking for powerpoint presentation templates, professionally done ones can give you a lot of input about which elements works together.

Good luck.

One of the main things I see people make a mistake of is not sticking to one design style throughout the thread design. This is a thing to keep note of while designing a thread.

1. Take note of where it will be posted, as Zyrl said
2. Pick a theme & stick to it throughout the design
3. Add the content you want and need and try to incorporate it into your design as best as you can.
