How profitable are these? I might buy/create one soon, also wanted to know if it's worth buying one or just creating your own?

I agree. I attempted one myself and it really got no where. They are unprofitable and just a waste of time.

Hard to make but if you have a really good one it will be profitable

Spend money to make money, if you can build up a server to over 2k members, you have a massive leg up over everyone else when it comes to getting customers for advertisements. Then you can start making your money back, but if your server is smaller then 1,000, good luck getting anywhere.

What a lot of people have done is partner up with other people. The biggest pro is that the cost gets divided, but that also means that profit gets divided.
