I would like to create a lobby, where players can enter and then choose which type of server to join.

Right now I have one server, so in the lobby, there would be a teleport with one server only.

As far I know I need only two servers (one for the lobby and one for another type) is this correct?

However, I have been told that I would need a proxy so that would be the third server. Is this somehow true?

Alrighty so as stated above you'll need the following:

x1 512mb Proxy Server
- This will host what is called a proxy server. This server will be the server that hosts bungeecord, lilypad ect on it. This is the server that users will connect via.

x1 1gb Lobby Server
- This will host the Lobby server which users will join by using the proxy server IP. From this server, users are able to connect to your game mode servers, for example, Factions, survival, minigames etc.

x1 2-4gb Gamemode Server (The amount of GB is optional depending on plugins etc)
- This will be the server that hosts the game mode of your choice on it such as Factions. Players will be able to join this server via first joining via the proxy server IP which will have the player join the lobby server which will then allow the user to join for example the faction server.

For the proxy server, you don't really need anything more then 512mb if you are only starting out. If you start to reach 100+ players joining at a time, I would then suggest having a 1gb-2gb proxy.

The Lobby server doesn't really need any more than 1gb-2gb unless you start having more than 100+ players on the server at a time.

The game mode server just depends on what sort of game mode you are planning to set up and how many players you initially are expecting. If you are planning to run the game mode survival, then 2gb-4gb should do you fine. However, if you are looking towards running Factions I would suggest 3gb+. This is purposely because of how much GB generally is used and how fast the server needs to be to run smoothly for the game mode.

If you have any further questions regarding this or how to do the setup, please feel free to message me!

Gamemode Amount + x Amount (Lobbies) + 1 (Bungee), that's how many servers you'll need.
