Do you tell people IRL about your online hustles/money making?

I always just generalize it like 'managing live gameservers and creating add-on content for users'. It's not wrong, but it doesn't quite hit the same as 'I make Minecraft plugins' haha

This is a neat thread, as this has been an issue that I have been struggling with ever since I started freelancing online. Often when I tell close family and friends what I do online, most of them disregard it as a joke. I live in Vancouver, a city where the median income exceeds $70,000 a year, and people always say that I'm going nowhere with my $10 Discord Setups. People tend to take for granted how something as small as doing silly setups for people could go somewhere with enough dedication and perseverance. It's like everyone thinks they will get rich quickly or that everything is just going to come easy to them because of their social status. Though in truth, it's not. Some might argue that money can buy time and make things easier, but that only works to an extent. People often take the little things for granted, and that becomes clearer and clearer the more I dive into the world of freelancing.

When I started there was little support. Laughed it off and called it a waste of time. Couple months into various kind of stuff I did at the time, I started pulling numbers. Showed them the numbers, now suddenly they wanted me to teach em and tell them what to do.

I told my family and close friends that I wrote Minecraft videos for good amounts of money. Even though I'm a reclusive person and I don't like to flaunt what I do, my parents bragged about it to a lot of people we know (even telling them how much I earned per month). When I lost that job, I was pressured because it felt like I need to live up to everyone's expectations. Luckily, I found another job that's a better fit for me. This time, I'm keeping how much I earn only to myself.

I was also pretty wasteful of the money I made. Ever since that fiasco, I learned to not take things for granted and just appreciate everything I have right now.

i remember in high-school (about 5 years ago), I would receive donations on my paypal and my friends would see my paypal notifcations go off every hour or so on my phone. they thought it was weird it was from minecraft, but cool that I was making a lot of money off it, especially while being 14 - 16
