Does anyone here know much about bikes

I'm currently looking into buying a bike due to extreme convenience (I plan to get a job and it's under a mile away from my house, and my school is about 2 miles away from my house). I like mountain bikes and I have no other knowledge on bikes and my budget for the entire thing is $500 since my grandparents are paying half of whatever I have to raise (currently $100/$250). Any help on what I should get?

If I'm saving to buy something I'm going all out and I also don't like getting scratched

i live in a city where there is a lot of crime, lot of drugs etc. i have a shitter bike i ride around and leave anywhere. prolly worth 20$

I live in a pretty suburban area but i literally cant trust people if i leave my bag around

You should look into electric bikes.

You probably don't want to get a ton of protective gear.
a ) it's uncomftorable
b ) I don't know where you live, but like I'm in cali and I'll swear to death if I wear a helmet.

Why not get a cheap but decent bike then like strap a 50 or 80cc engine to it :3
I hear they get like 80-100 miles / gal.

Not as hot where I live I see ppl with helmets all the time. The only protective gear there is a helmet and then some pads for elbow wrist and knees nothing else rly

My friend has one of those but im not rly into that tried it
