I have gained most of my reputation through deals and I've found that if you're the first one to encourage it, through giving them a positive rep, they're more likely to give one back after it (this is not fool proof though). Acting over all professional and helping others out can also result in positive rep and it's a general idea of what the community thinks of you as a person.
One very important thing to keep in mind is to never imply/ request rep onto you or others, as you can read later in the spoiler regarding the rules.
