Hi! I am interested in getting a website domain. I wanted to learn about how it works, what it costs. I wanted to make a website on SquareSpace. However, I want my own custom domain. I have not been able to figure it out. Anyone able to explain how domains work, and where I can get them for cheap? Thanks.

You register domains using domain registrars such as namecheap.com, godaddy.com, etc.

Then, you can purchase web hosting from the domain registrars or purchase web hosting from third party providers like what Green Bat Ind. offers for example.

You can even rent VPSs or Dedicated Servers to run websites from.

Okay. So say I go on NameCheap. I want to buy a certain domain. What is the difference between the normal price they give me and the retail price. Also, could you explain what a website like SquareSpace does? Does it host, or do I need to pay for that somewhere else. Thanks.

Sometimes, certain tlds on Namecheap have sales. The normal or sale price I believe is the price that you'll pay for the first year, and the retail price is for the years that follow.
Squarespace hosts.

Squarespace hosts.
So I could get free hosting through SquareSpace? And purchase a domain from NameCheap and be all set to go?

I think you'd have to purchase a paid plan of Squarespace for that, and get the domain through them.
Okay, so say I have my domain yeah, then if I used something like your business what would it charge me for hosting. Also, where is it able to buy domains permanently, not yearly.
