I know probably isn't supposed to go in hosting but I thought it was more relatable than other things. So my question is, is dual CPU better for hosting a Minecraft server? I really don't know the difference but for example let's compare a

Dual Xeon E5-2670 32GB 480GB SSD Preconfig
2.66GHz / 3.3GHz Turbo
16 Cores / 32 threads
to an
Intel Core i7-6700K 32GB + 2x 480GB SSD Preconfig
3.4GHz / 4GHz Turbo
4 Cores / 8 Threads

Which would be better and why? Thanks for reading!

Minecraft mostly uses a single thread, so I would go with the i7 since it has a higher clock speed. It also has 2 SSD's, so you can RAID 1 those, to protect against hard drive failure. Or if you need extra speed, take regular backups, and feeling brave, you could do a RAID 0.

Minecraft uses a single core since it's compatible with Java 6. Since Java 7, JVM has better compatibility with multi-core processing. I would get the the Intel i7 with 3.4GHz. Rule of thumb for buying MC server's: go low core and high frequency.

Edit: Fire beat me to it :/

Cool, thanks guys. From what you've said I picked out another dual CPU with 4 cores and a pretty good clock speed so how would this guy hold up compared to the other two:
Dual Intel Xeon 5080
3.73Ghz - 2 processors
4 Cores / 8 Threads
Thanks again.

I would still stick with the Intel i7 since it has a turbo clock speed.

Thanks but would that be worth the extra $30 a month? Doesn't seem like it to me but I have no idea about specs so.

The xeon is quite an old one. Yes its had a good clock speed, but I would still say the i7, would be quite a bit better. Not always fully about clock speed, and newer CPU's come with newer technologies, and they tend to preform better.[DOUBLEPOST=1472784793][/DOUBLEPOST]

That's quite a bit extra. Does the Xeon dedi have an SSD? or anything else that would make it more worth your while paying the extra?

Didn't even realize it's not SSD, I'm dumb. :p Sorry for the confusion

That's okay, I find if its a highspeed HDD, it doesn't matter too much. But if its a standard desktop HDD, like it probably is, a SSD would be fat better. If OVH is still a little costly, SoYouStart can also be a good alternative.

Matters on how many MC servers you're planning to run, and if you're looking to run another kind of program.
How many MC servers will be running on the server?
Not sure yet, which is better for more and which is better for less?

i7 for I would say 8 or under servers, maybe the first Xeon if you need to be running more than that.

Additionally, if you want more servers with smaller performance you can use virtual cores.
