Well, if it is something as small as this you should do it for free. This community is so toxic it's fucking unreal, lmao. Minecraft's community is better than this.

Developers who work for free are exactly the problem with this community, and it's exactly why people (like you, no offense intended) have a degraded and distorted view of devs and their worth.

Now, don't get me wrong. I did some 20-minute jobs for free to get my foot in the door in this community, because you need reputation to get paid jobs around here usually. However, this job (I've been talking with the OP) isn't a 20-minute job, it's some decent edits to the code. In my book, any job above 30 minutes deserves at least some pay, even if it's not a lot, no matter who's doing it. If the person does the job right, they deserve money for it.

To put this into perspective, developers at starter-level jobs at major tech corps (Microsoft, Google) are paid in the $45-$50 / hour range usually. I, on the other hand, am I respectably experienced developer in this community, and I usually average about $5 an hour. My work for plugins may not be worth anywhere near the work of a college-grad going into a start-level tech job in Silicon Valley, but it certainly isn't worth 1/10 the hourly pay. Yet that's what I make here, less than minimum wage. And the reason why isn't because my work isn't worth more, it's because this community, and the Minecraft development community as a whole, have a lowered view of developers because of the quantity of younger people in this community.

Now, don't get me wrong, the youth in this community is what makes it amazing. This was the place that I first discovered I could sell my work online, and it's done wonderful things for me and put me on the track towards a solid career in CS. That being said, other than acting as a springboard for younger people to get into tech jobs, this community is a rather bad place to work due to the quantity of younger people here who artificially devalue developer's work.

TL;DR: Developers work is valuable, no matter what community it's in. We deserve to be paid for our work.

P.S: To be clear, I am not insulting your view of developers or their time. Maybe you're just a nice person who believes helping others with an hour of your time doesn't deserve pay here, and that's admirable. I am not directly targeting you in any way, only expressing my discontent and the discontent of most respected developers in this community towards the way our work is perceived by people who don't understand that it's valuable, skilled labor. No ill will here, and I'm not trying to start a fight, only to explain why our work should be valued and why it currently isn't.
