I've been playing factions for a long time since 2015. I have been away from Minecraft for a long time as well.

I mean change isn't bad at all right?

Combat mechanics are different from what I remember back in the day with the new versions of Minecraft.

The reason I am reaching out for some advice or hear what the community has to say about why they prefer 1.8.8 instead of the newest release of Minecraft version 1.18.1.

I am working on a server in my free time and I am having trouble with what version should I choose 1.8.8 or 1.18.1.

If you are a faction player and you are active in the community most of the servers out there are still running on the 1.8.8 version but still supporting the new Minecraft version at the same time. But we can't denied that overall the mechanics that the server is using are from 1.8.8.

What does the faction community prefer an old version instead of the newest update?

Your feedback will guide me to the correct decision that I am having a hard time making.

Several reasons.

1- Factions is a very niche game mode now. In 2012, Factions was simply an anti-grief plugin to help protect players, and there weren't payouts, extreme donation perks, lootboxes, tnt cannons, obby fortresses, or extreme farming. The game mode today requires zero Minecraft survival skills, and has a very distant community from any other game mode, so most of those people don't care enough if the server updates to 1.18.

2- The combat update. This isn't as much of an issue as it was 4 years ago, but most good pvp mods were made in the 1.8 to 1.12 era. This is why most factions & mini game servers are meant for older versions of the game.

3- Lag, versions after 1.12 are very laggy compared to the older ones, and Mojang aren't helping at all. 1.18's update is probably the most performance intensive yet

And thats it! If you want to make a 1.18 factions server, feel free to do so, but there's really no reason to. There's more downsides than upsides, and I'm saying this because I was in that market until I realized that my server faced an identity crisis so I pulled out.
