You never know.. You could say the same thing for people who used Cracked Minecraft but they still get players. Obviously chances are low that he would get a successful server but there is still a good chance he can make it big and use those donations for a domain and website.

Running a server isn't easy. With everything "free", you could make it succeed. But typically people who want it free don't know how. You need to learn how to pay for things, and maybe be more professional.
