So I've been making factions maps for clients for a while now, and I've always done separate biomes in a similar way they occur in vanilla minecraft. Now, I'm wondering if that is even necessary.
If I were to make a map that has all the requirements of separate biomes spread around randomly, but there are no clear biome 'areas' defined, what would the upsides and downsides be for that?

The downside would be it would look a little worse in renders/dynmaps. Factions players only care about clicking on people, you could make a 10k x 10k map of only sponge and as long as there were players to kill they would play it
Honestly, I think it wouldn't look worse the way I do it. It would be like this:
in comparison.

The second pic looks way better
exactly, which is why it would be a relief for me to be able to do it like this, instead of having to do the other (ok, the other is probably the simplest one I've made this year, but still).
I guess it's hard to say how it would do without actually trying, but I guess a poll might be the best option.
