Feedback on the plausibility of a server being sucessful?

Hello MCM,

Recently my life has been very boring. In this period of boredom I began a project server
that was originally just something to do, but I think it could actually be a fun and challenging experience and I was wondering if anyone might have interest in the server. If it were to get enough interest I'd be willing to invest more time and some money into and actually make it something players could enjoy.

Here are some details about the server's current and planned gameplay features.

SaigaMc features a large, ready to upscale map. The map current playable zones include a large city, many small towns and groups of houses, some trails connecting it all together, and large dense forests and plains.

Within the buildings of the city and towns are chests that restock with items such as guns & ammunition, armor, food, raw materials & blocks (iron, gold, diamonds, Redstone, wooden logs, cobble stone, etc). Loot is currently individual for each player and restocks every 24 hours. Most of the loot is sporadic with only a few chests in each building, but there are a few locations with large chest amounts which are guarded by Bandits powered by AI. Additionally, an airdrop will be dropped somewhere within the city periodically (currently undetermined) containing higher tier loot, announcing its coordinates to incite competition for the loot. All towns and trails are claimed as Warzones which disallows building, breaking blocks, and claiming bases for factions.

The wilderness (areas that are not the main city, towns, or trails) offer a similar experience to vanilla Minecraft, allowing players to build & claim bases, go mining, cut down trees, you know, the standard Minecraft factions experience.

The server also features custom zombies, and "hellhounds." There are various types of zombies, some are slow with high damage and heath, some are fast with low damage and normal health, some are just regular old zombies. Hellhounds are wolves that spawn already aggressive towards all players. These dogs are a bit faster than normal wolves and will stop at nothing to kill you.

I plan to also include a vehicles system allowing for faster travel across the map via cars, boats, and even helicopters and airplanes. Whether these vehicles will include weaponry will depend on community feedback and my ability to program.

We would also be running events offering rewards either in-game or via irl payments or donation store credits.

Should this project become an actual server, I'm of course open to all feature suggestions and will be including lots of polls to ensure every feature is something a majority of the community would enjoy. As someone who has played on servers where the community is ignored and watched really cool concepts die out because of poorly designed features, community feedback would be a very important component to releasing and updating this server.

As for plans on making money off of this. I have no intentions on profiting off of this server. Running it would be a fun project and that is enough for me. Though earning enough in donations to pay off the server hosting would be nice, I don't have a problem hosting it out of pocket unless it gets too expensive. The server would feature 100% cosmetic donation features such as chat prefixes, trails, etc. Nothing that can be bought with irl money would provide any advantage in-game.

I plan to run the server in seasons, resetting it every few months or so. After a season or two of beta I would be open to considering IRL money payments via PayPal to the top faction.

This game mode sounds like something I've played before and it has gained a lot of traction within a certain community.
I do think rationally; it might be hard to get players as it's an acquired "taste" for the game mode but if you can entice the community with custom features, or even sometimes the staff you hire will bring along a loyal amount of friends to play.

As for the features, I would definitely suggest having a strong dedicated beta team to stress the bug prior to release. Given that this game mode is a touch and go kind of game, it would be in your best interest to really know the plugins you're working with and hire accordingly. Everyone loves custom plugins, so if you can make it happen, definitely do try as it'll make your server stand out to the community.

I did join your discord and will note that you will get players due to having payouts but to follow the EULA, you really do need to ensure that your store items are relative to cosmetic only or else you'll risk having your server blacklisted if you gain the players to be on Mojang's radar. You've already mentioned cosmetic only, I just figured I'd point it out.

To get more players (hopefully); prior to release I would recommend getting someone to make a trailer of your server that you can have your members reupload for start of the world rewards (exclusive tags, a crate of some description etc.)

All in all, this idea you have sounds great and I think it's something that someone with the right mindset can accomplish.

Hello :) sounds like a good idea. I like the no P2W thing you want to go with. I would suggest you enable people to be able to donate to the server and then use those funds to either upkeep the server or improve it! Besides that seasons sounds like fun, although make sure that players still feel that they actually progress. Anyway good luck with the project, it sounds promising!

Thank you for your response! I have a group of friends who are interested in the project that I will be doing extensive beta testing with to ensure the server is 100% ready for official release when we chose to release it. I’m working on cosmetics and such for donation options as originally planned because P2W sucks and as you brought up (which I actually forgot about) goes against Mojang’s EULA. I’ve already made several custom plugins and am considering slowly redoing most of the server fully custom to ensure that every feature operates exactly the way I want to, and of course I’m constantly working on creating new features that are either different from what has been seen before or are completely new.

I’m set on making the sever 0% P2W. I’m thinking cosmetics are the way to go. I also have a few other ideas for donation perks that would be more gameplay based but that would not provide any advantage to the donator.

Reading your suggestion about making sure players feel like they’re progressing through each season gave me an idea. A sort of token system of some sort where based on certain things (F-Top placement, total quests completed, total kills, etc) you would receive a certain amount of reset coins that you could spend on either items to start next season or cosmetics, perhaps both giving the option of choosing would be cool.

I really like this idea :) would def be something that makes me want to play a lot more frequently.

I have an idea for this system. I'm working on a completely custom shop plugin that will allow me to create a system where you can use a command that will sell everything in your inventory. I will then base the entire reset system based on your factions placement in /f top, and perhaps also based on the amount of money you have. I think this would be very cool.
