Be very careful with your passwords, if this was a dedicated server, and not a VPS you would be in a lot more trouble, most hosts don’t have a simple password reset button for those. If you have problems remembering a password for the VPS, write it down on a bit of paper and keep it safe.

I would recommend in the future using a SSH key since they are more secure than passwords for VPS's and Dedicated servers

Alternately he could use a USB and a "self hosted" password manager. Then he can just keep the USB in a safe place until he need to get the information again.

As an added measure the USB won't be able to just be "plug and grab" so he would "buy some time" should the USB ever be stolen.
