INTRODUCTION-
Look. I am not an AMAZING player, but I am pretty good. I have like 100 wins and don't even play that much. I started playing in January, and recently only play a couple matches a day if that. You will see amazing highlights of streamers, but what about the games where they instantly die? I watch Fortnite streams including Myth's, Ninja's, Dakotaz, and MANY other pro players after seeing their incredible clips, just to watch them die half of the time because they were unlucky. By saying this, I am not denying that they aren't amazing players. 99% of the time they will win in an even fight, or even if they have a slight disadvantage. But there is not much you can do to kill somebody when all you have is your pick axe.

EARLY GAME-
So what I believe one of the greatest ways to become better as a NEW PLAYER is to play passively. Drop somewhere smaller, like factories, snobby, and places on the outside of the map. Get situated, have a chance to find a gun so that you are able to get into a pretty fair fight. Maybe the other person has a scar and you only have an AR, but that is OK! As you play, you will get better at handling early game fights at a disadvantage. As you progress and get better, drop some of the smaller places that maybe 2 or three other people go to. Some of my favorite spots to this day are Fatal and Anarchy, and if I drop there I almost never die, being a decently good player. You will keep progressing and getting better and better, working your way up to bigger towns, such as Retail, Salty, and Pleasant. With my skill level, I will survive at these places 90% of the time, which isn't that bad. No matter what any pro player or streamer says, I can assure you that the early game is the HARDEST part of the game.

MID GAME-

Okay, now lets say that you are getting better at the early game. You drop Fatal, Anarchy, maybe even Retail or Pleasant. You can survive early game about 75% of the time, and leave with 1 or 2 kills and a decent loadout. Lets say after being in fights you have about 75 health from bandages, and 50 shield after finding mini's. You have an okay AR, some sort of shotgun, a few meds and maybe a sniper, grenade launcher, grenades, or and SMG/LMG. Not the perfect loadout, but enough to get a couple kills. Now is what can start to be the slightly boring part of the game, IF you are playing safe and not searching for constant action. From here is where I will teach my number one tip. If I would have learned this when I started playing, I would have progressed 10 times as fast. Here's the tip: Build before you shoot, build before you shoot, BUILD BEFORE YOU SHOOT. Whether the enemy is 300 meters away or attempting to shotgun you, BUILD BEFORE YOU SHOOT. This is one of the tips that pro players say that I agree with. What sets a player aside from being okay is building. In a shotgun fight, your odds are usually at most 75/25. With hitboxes in this game, you can pump someone in the head for 40 damage and then get shot by a tactical shotgun back for 100+. What lets professionals win these fights is their building. If you are in a 1x1 and can peek someone, you will win every single fight. If you are the other person, standing in the open, unable to see the other player until they peek, you WILL die 100% of the time, which leads me to my next tip. After you leave the early game, farm. Fatal Fields is my favorite spot to drop for a few reasons. #1- I can rack up about 5 kills normally. #2 It has good enough loot to carry me into mid game. #3, and the most important- MATERIALS. Around Fatal, there are 3 forests, each having about 1000 materials in total. Also, there are 2 rock formations, which hold around 500+ brick each. Even if you drop here with a full squad, you will all be able to get max wood and a couple hundred brick. This is a VITAL step that many new players and even pretty good players skip that is holding them back from getting better. After farming, choose your fights. Yes, in Fortnite you are able to CHOOSE your fights. If you are in a bad position, don't engage. If they see you first, go back to my #1 tip- build before you shoot. Launch pad away, impulse away, build behind you as you run, do whatever it takes to get out of that situation if you are confident that you are unable to take the high ground, or if you know that they are a good player. However, as you progress, practice taking on these fights. Use the building skill you have learned to take over highground, and dominate the fight. And my final tip for late game, kick them while they're down. When you see a player die, go for the person who killed them. One terrible habit almost all players have is that they are loot hungry. Great players usually don't talk about this when asked the best tips, but it is essential. You rarely "don't have" enough ammo. "Don't have" enough mats, or "don't have" enough health. There is no such thing as enough or not enough, it all depends on how you play. Play smart, and don;t freak out as soon as you get in a fight. Set yourself up for success. Check how much ammo you have for long range, medium range, and close range, and check your materials. Use this knowledge to your advantage. Don't spam walls if you don't have to. If you you are in a medium range fight and don't have a lot of AR ammo, use a pistol or SMG to break down the walls and run through their supplies. Keep what you need, while doing your best to conserve what you don't. Lastly, there are usually there are around 20 players left by the end of mid-game.

LATE GAME-

Now, there are 15-25 player left. The storm is moving in to close in on the third circle, or already is on the third circle. You picked up 2 kills early game, and another 1 or 2 mid-game. (I will use worst case scenario for the supplies you have, meaning you will usually have a better loadout than what I say) After these kills, you still only have a blue AR, green shotgun, some bandages or a medkit, a couple mini's or a big shield, and a hunting rifle. Take what you have into consideration. You happen to have a lot of materials but not a lot of ammo. Because of this you realize, "Huh. even though I am low on ammo I have a lot of materials. I guess I could try to play more aggressive then usual to get in close range fights. I am pretty good at building and you don't need much shotgun ammo to win a fight." Or the other way around, you have a lot of ammo but no materials. "Alright, let's see. I have less than 100 materials, so I need to stay medium to long range. I have enough to build a wall ramp combo and replace the wall a couple times. There is a building behind me that I could fall back to if I had to, and I have a hunting rifle to use from my little ramp." Using a mindset like this will be very helpful late game. In most games, there may be SOME skill, but there is no logic or playing smart. In Fortnite late game, it is 90% logic/how you play/playing smart, and 10% your luck. At this point, unlike early game where you can choose where to drop, you are stuck with what you have and are forced to make do. Use what you have to your advantage, and minimize how much you will have to use what you don't have. By doing this, are setting an even playing field even if you have no materials and somebody else has everything they could ever want. Use the tips all the way through the very end, and you will have your best chances at getting a Victory Royale.

Building Tips-

Here I am just going to give a couple easy tips and techniques that are helpful when in build fights/you need to build. #1- The double wall & ramp technique: building 4 walls around you can take a lot of time and use up all of your materials. If you often get caught under another player after they build up twice as fast as you do, consider using this tip (NOT FOR LONG TERM BASES). To do this, simply place two perpendicular walls in front of you, and then a ramp (switch the direction of the ramp back and fourth every layer you go up) Visual: Imagine you are the ` and are against a player in the bottom right of your screen. |_` Build walls in that formation and then place a ramp, so that you only have to place 2 walls instead of four, and barely have to turn. Many people already know this, and yes, it is a basic tip. #2- The double ramp technique. If you get in a build fight and happen to lose the high ground, many time you will be directly under a player. This tip works best when a player if right above you, and they will be unable to see/shoot you at all. Place a normal ramp out from the 1x1, and then one above you as well. As you go, continue placing ramps above and below you. This makes it impossible to see you, and they have to shoot through 2 ramps to knock you down. I suggest only going out 2 ramps, and then placing a wall towards the original 1x1. From here, you can play a another ramp and then push back towards them.

Hopefully, you have taken something out of this, because I want to help new players get better. It took me months to get as good as I am now, and as of now I usually win one in 4 games if I actually try.

Best of luck,

Charlie

I originally wrote this on the Epic Games forums but would also like to post it here. I would have wrote a lot more but there is a max character limit on their forums. Original post: https://www.epicgames.com/fortnite/...how-to-win-fortnite-tips-tricks-for-beginners
