If you don't have a portfolio :

1. Vouch Copies -->
Pro: Gain reputation and portfolio grows
Con: Giving Free Art

2. Building Portfolio of your own graphics
Pro: Build a portfolio to show
Con: Your issue of reputation still would need to be solved (eventually meaning you would give away vouch copies)

I would recommend a few vouch copies to solve your portfolio and reputation issue, so people know how good you are, and how legit you are
