Hey friends!

I was curious to find out what everyone’s favorite server type is and get some feedback on the current ones today! I’m also thinking a revisiting owning a server, is it worth even trying to start one of these up at this point or would you recommend investing into a new server type/game mode entirely?

Thank you for the feedback in advance!

Investing into a new server type/game mode could run into the thousands but should be the most rewarding.`

RPG costs (20k USD+)> https://www.spigotmc.org/threads/world-of-warcraft-based-server-cane-it-be-done.300604/#post-2866270
Minigame cost: Anywhere from 1000 to 2500+ USD.
The rest would hover somewhere around 1000 USD.

However, anything besides RPG and Minigames (must be a new minigame) has been overdone. Simply because they are cheaper to do and can sometimes be done with less than 100 USD as budget.

But if you want to make a quick buck and morals do not interfere with what you are doing then Factions is perfect. Prison is almost completely dead as far as I know. Skyblock can be brought to life with a good revamp. Towny servers? It's factions but fewer people that are interested.

I would also advise you to not look at people's current favourite servers but look at what could be someone's favourite server.

I appreciate the information! There’s no limit on my budget to be honest, and I’m looking to develop a server I’m proud of and people will enjoy playing and pretty much leaning towards creating a whole new concept. I’m a developer and have a few buddies that are always willing to help with development as well. I’ve thought about taking a server type a revamping it completely but I’m not sure what road I want to take with that one. Anyways I appreciate the information and feedback!

The price also reflects man hours. So if you are a developer yourself you can guess how much time you would have to invest in them.

Oh yeah I bet, time and money isn’t a issue it’s the initial concept I’m wanting to get down first. Honestly just the server idea itself could take a lot of time due to ideas and planning then condensing it into a structure road map.

My advice again would to be not look for something perfect or plan everything out. If you are going with something unique you will fail time and time again. However, the trial-and-error path of working is a lot better for such projects because you are working. You often get stuck in planning if you want everything to be perfect/good. By this I am not saying that you do not need a plan or a good road map.

Now what server type would even be worth it to revamp, that’s if I wanted to go down that road.

Depends if you will break the EULA or not.

Anything but Factions quite honestly, that market is supersaturated. However, what most server owners fail to realize is the amount of time and money you put into the server has nothing to do with how successful it will be down the road. All you have to do is put effort into a project and actually care for the community you begin to build and you'll already gain a following. Too many owners nowadays only care for the money and not the community. I realize this is more advice for after you start working, but it definitely still applies.

As per gamemodes, Minigames is always a good route as there are lots of ways to run a minigames network without getting blocked by the EULA, look at Hypixel and you can see just how customizable those networks can be. But do take note these networks can be very expensive to start up, especially if you are running more than one game. On the cheaper side, Skyblock is always a great option.

Overall, just create something you're passionate about and don't forget about advertising.

I appreciate the response! Yeah that’s why I don’t see money or time as a factor. I wanted to figure out a possible path to take and especially something I would enjoy being apart of. If I can’t have fun playing a server I develop then what’s the point of making it in the first place. I see a constant flow of cookie cutter servers that make me sick. Yes, advertising is always something look for as well and is something I’m willing to put a lot into. Anyways thank you again!
