Hello,

I’m currently 19, when I was around 14 I was big into making Minecraft servers. I had made thousands as a teenager by implementing P2W features on an OP Prison server. I never made plugins, only made the config files.

I stopped playing Minecraft and stopped making Minecraft servers and have since moved onto university where I am currently studying Computer Science.

I have experience in various programming languages such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, C++ but most importantly Java and object-orientated programming.

So my question, is selling plugin development still a big practice? Am I able to make a decent side income for my studies whilst also building a good portfolio of work to potentially show to future employers? Is it worth it considering the time that goes in?

I haven’t used the Spigot API for development as well, how long does it usually take to adopt the API. What projects could I do with plugins to learn the API?

Kind Regards,
itss

This is what I like to see. I would say that if you utilize and use your plugin development skills well then you can definitely make more than $5K per month on the side. If you want to talk more about what visions I would have for a person who's good at plugin development and the skills you listed above, feel free to hop into my DMs on discord (iamsir).

Hey!

Plugin development is still a big thing. Espically on sites like Fiverr and Upwork people will pay a decent amount and I have found once your job page gets enough reviews and starts getting recommended by said companies then yes, you can make a lot of money.

I also wouldn't use Spigot API, I personally enjoy the paper API more now. I feel Spigot is slowly dropping off a little bit, but at the end of the day it's your choice. Also, picking up the API shouldn't be too hard if you know a decent bit of Java. Throughout my years of seeing people trying to pickup the API they know nothing about Java. Yes, it can be done but they instantly expect to learn it and that's not how it goes.

There are no set projects that you can do with the API. I suggest when picking up the API to start small and just be creative. Make small things then slowly build up. You could also use ChatGPT for some ideas.

Hope this helps :)

What do you think? Can spigot development be a full-time job opportunity? Does it have bright future, in terms of minecraft's current state?

It 100% can be a full time job opportunity. I just wouldn't call it a stable income. It's not something I would rely on personally. You also need to think that if it is a full time job, you'd need to report taxs (which is a pain) and all other stuff that involves being self-employed.

A long the way of learning spigot though you're learning Java too which can be a full time job with an employer.
