Your heart is like two pumps, one pumps in blood, the other pumps out blood. There are several things that can disrupt this however. Congestive heart failure is a great one. Let's say that due to low blood pressure, blood is pooling up in your heart. In response, the heart will enlarge, to try and push the blood out. This is a good sort term solution, but it won't last forever and the blood will go back into your lungs. This makes it hard to breath. Your body thinks it doesn't have enough fluid, so it will start collecting all the fluid you intake. However, you don't actually need it, and the fluid has to go somewhere, so it leaks into your arms, legs, all over your body. People who have this gain 2-3 pounds per day, and after 1 month 100 pounds. There is no way a human could gain this amount of weight in any other way. So, it's the only rational explanation to your mom.
