Good animes for a noob?

So I've been hearing a lot about this anime craze and frankly I don't get it.
Whenever I think of anime, I think of Pokemon, but all anime enthusiasts get very defensive whenever I say Pokemon is an anime. I don't see why because Ash and the other Pokemon characters all have that similar anime art style and big eyes.

Thus, I need some recommendations for good animes and where to watch them for free. I don't want to spend money on something I might not enjoy and I don't support piracy.

My preference is comedy, so if there are any funny ones, post them below!

Netflix: The Boondocks
It is a very funny one, the first few episodes are boring but you'll enjoy it later on it is by far my favorite one

Will definitely check that out as soon as I get another netflix account. I like funny stuff.
