pokemon is anime. idk why anyone would dispute that.
i generally think full metal alchemist: brotherhood is a great entry level anime.
i would not recommend naruto, fairy tail, or sword art online.
besides full metal alchemist: brotherhood, i would recommend for newbies:

hunter x hunter (2011)
no game no life
fate/stay night: unlimited blade works
death note
cowboy bebop
attack on titan
samurai champloo
my experience is that once someone is past a certain age it just becomes impossible to convert them over to liking anime, though.
