Good Building Schemes?

I need some good blocks schemes that will work well with different builds. I'm open to all ideas.
Here's an example:
Oak Wood on Stone Brick on Oak Log on Cobblestone
(I just need some blocks that I can build off of.)

It all depends on the themes your going for.
If I were going with the oak wood on Stonebrick I'd add some red clay in there.
