Just curious if anyone had used the google cloud services compute engine to host a server before?

I used one, it started lagging pretty bad after I hit about 100 players.

Too expensive once free trial has passed for minecarft servers, they nickel and dime all the bandwidth you take up.

Although this is true, this isn't why people use cloud services.
If you plan on supporting a set number of players for a significant term (months or longer) you shouldn't use a cloud service. More than anything else cloud services allow constant growth with little trouble or price hike, this is much harder to do with a dedicated machine.

Cloud services are fine (especially Google Cloud, which seems to be more price competitive compared to Amazon's EC2 pricing) for a constantly growing server or for someone who doesn't know how big they're going to grow.
