Hey all,

I often see posts/comments/messages these days along the lines of "there is a lot less opportunity nowadays" or "there is a lot less money to be made" or even "its dead" when people talk about the 3rd party eco system for Minecraft; that being the buying and selling of 3rd party resources like plugins, builds, purchasing of server list slots, purchasing of hosting, the general selling of goods and anything else related to buying and selling in the Minecraft space.

I used to be quite active during 2013-2015 which I believe people consider to be the "peak" of the Minecraft 3rd party eco system, although I may be wrong on that. I wondered what the consensus was on this situation these days?

Do people generally find they struggle now more than they did, are things harder, are things the same just different? Do you make more/less?

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts and any stats you have to back up your thoughts.

I chucked in a poll too, for the lols.

Thanks,

Kingleo

With the growing push of Bedrock edition as the base game of Minecraft, the "third-party ecosystem" is starting to shrink. However, the growth of Bedrock edition is also allowing a professional market to arise, allowing established teams to make money directly through the bedrock platform, allowing for monetization opportunities never seen in the past. In other words, it's harder to get in than it was previously but for the limited amount of people who Microsoft has approved, there is potential for big money.

If you are talking about the classic p2w model that a lot of servers used pre-2015, then yes, the market for those types of servers has gone down along with most of the old Minecraft multiplayer scene. Remember all of the old minigame networks that used to exist? Most of them have closed their doors or are barely staying afloat. Those who did manage to stay afloat are capitalizing on the growing bedrock scene, which some have been using to keep their dying Java networks alive.

So what is the conclusion? It depends on where you sit. If you are an amateur looking to make money on Java, then good luck. If you have a budget and are willing to go for the lucrative Bedrock market, it will be more expensive and tricker but go ahead. Has it gotten harder? Definitely, though who knows what Microsoft has in the books for the future of third-party monetization.
