Hello Market,

Just a general discussion, I am trying to figure out if making a comeback and opening a server would be beneficial. I have been debating it for a while, but just couldn't pull the trigger. I guess I am just wanting some community feedback.

You shouldn't make a server just for money, yes, money is good and all. But you shouldn't do it just to make some money!
No where in this thread did I mention making money? I just remember the communities that were formed long ago, and how much I miss that interaction.

The game has made a pretty big comeback over the past year. However it’s not really the same community anymore. I personally wouldn’t attempt to release a server unless it was a passion project.

Sloth said it best. Minecraft’s community didn’t make a “come back”, in my eyes. This is just a new generation of kids playing. The 12-year olds who played Mineplex are now my age and older, beginning to move on. The current 12-year olds on Hypixel are a new wave. It’s just a new generation thing.

I wouldn’t release a server unless it was genuinely unique and you were set out to provide a different and new gameplay experience.

A contradiction. A community centred around a game doesn't rely on the individuals themselves but as a whole. If a new generation is playing then that generation is that community. I think you're mistaking personal values in the players, who play (obviously), for popularity.

With that being said, if you want objective information: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=minecraft, from Google.

Alternatives (can't vouch for reliability):
https://www.statista.com/statistics/680139/minecraft-active-players-worldwide/
https://minecraft-statistic.net/en/global_statistic.html

Please keep in mind trends can contradict each other due to error in measurement (particularly, where it's being measured from. Google is a good indicator in this sense though, because it's effectively universal).

Well the reason I was asking was to release a server based around community interaction, not saying they don't exist because I am positive they do but I want the old type of interaction. The server where you look forward to getting on every day and playing with the friends you made in time past. I miss that kind of server. So I would classify it as a passion project, trying to rekindle the past and project it forwards.[DOUBLEPOST=1579644962][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah, like i replied to sloth. It is not so much a unique gameplay experience as much as wanting to bring back that community interaction and have that same involvement. Something to look forward to improving everyday for the sake of the players who populate the server.[DOUBLEPOST=1579645285][/DOUBLEPOST]

First of thank you for going out of your way to track down statistics like this. Honestly did not expect that. In addition to that at the time I reply there were 711k players on the game and it is 4:18 local time. Which seems pretty good considering it is a school day and some places have not let out.

Alright, I've been thinking about this topic a lot recently, so I'm just going to throw down some of my thoughts.

So, this is what I've been thinking. People from a certain era which were playing Minecraft have now grown up and stopped playing which leaves us in a little bit of a sticky situation.

Now, I don't think that the game is dying in a sense, nor do I think that its time has come to shut down. I think that since those long time players are now starting to quit and go off to things like college and their future, we are going to have a new generation of players come in. But it will take time for it to come in, we're going to need to wait for them to grow old enough, gain enough sense, and much more. But eventually I believe that they will be able to bring back the Minecraft community like it used to be with all the active players.

Opening a server in 2020 isn't a great idea, i saw owners pay thousands of euro just to close the server months ago because there's no way of doing profit. Hypixel is winning all and only the established servers will now work out for some years, before they close if there's no difference in playerbase. In my country there's one "Little Hypixel" that usually has 2000 players online that got its players by attacking other servers and deleting them (literally). Their entire playerbase is made out of children who don't get that they have players by ruining other servers. I don't wanna talk about the server, cause it's common, it's made so bad.
The other two servers in the top are bad because of the budget, they can't even afford builders (usually 200 on).
1-2 years back? The "Little Hypixel" has the same playerbase, but the other two servers usually have around 600 and 300 online.
It's dying slowly at least in my country. But i looked into another servers that launched globally that just paid thousands on advertisments and got 20-40 playerbase. Not profitable.

As mentioned before its not about turning a profit. Just wanting to get a community together.

I don't know if its come back but many things have changed. I can't seem to get enough players using just voting server lists. Sponsored slots don't work as well either. Something to look out for.

Minecraft has definitely lost its popularity, although in the past year it did seem to start to make a come back. Once Fortnite came out it really took a lot of the community, mostly the younger audience but around September I noticed that MC was starting to have a come back although that seems to have ended and it has died back down.

It's growing, but still, you cannot beat the old days of Minecraft. I miss what it was like a couple years back
