Hey guys, I'm looking to open a server somewhere in the near future. Here's the bad part, I really have no idea what to look for when buying hosting. What are the most eye catching things I should definitily look for when purchasing some hosting?

I'm unaware of what "ram" or "storage" means regarding Minecraft hosting. If someone could leave a list of what these mean amoung the others I should know about down below in the comments that would be super helpful to not only me, but others that might not know.

So with all that covered, can someone give me some estimated numbers of how much "ram" and "storage" and all the other things using the following information.
• The server is going to have 50+ plugins
• looking for it to be capable of holding 50+ players on at a time.
• %100 uptime (obviously)

I really have no idea what other relevant information I need to give. If there's some much need info that I need to include please let me know.
Alright hopefully I can gain some knowledge of what I'm doing. Thanks, Neon

I would say 8-16GB RAM, 60-120GB Storage. It mostly depends on what plugins you are using really. Ones like coreprotect need loads of storage space. It also depends on your map, how big etc.

A good rule of thumb for determining how much RAM you need in order to support a certain number of players simultaneously is to look at the last 3 digits of the RAM amount in megabytes. Make sure you use the power of 2 variant. These estimates don't account for plugins, so you will need to go higher if you have a lot of plugins, but at least this gives you a starting point.

512 MB = 12 players
1024 MB = 24 players
2048 MB = 48 players
3072 MB = 72 players
4096 MB = 96 players
8192 MB = 192 players
Those amounts look okay, but i would say for 10 player or less plugins. For a small spigot server, its recomended to have atlest 2GB of RAM, or have very few plugins.

Thanks for the input guys! Croc Fire

Quick question, so for 2048 mb, would that be capable of holding 50 plugins? If not how many?

With that amount of players, i would say 20, depends on the plugin though.

Ah ok so do you think 4096 mb would be my best bet? That might be a little more that needed, but would that extra ram decrease lag?[DOUBLEPOST=1467218492][/DOUBLEPOST]**I don't know if ram has any relation to lag*

4GB would be okay, about right. However i always go above whats right, just incase. if you use a host like Smishcraft i know their servers perform very well, and you can pickup a 8GB server for just $10 a month.

They hosted my server for a while, before i went into setting my own dedi up. I know the owner of smishcraft quite well, he doesnt really do it for the money, and doesnt make alot from hosting them.

Damn, they're currently out of stock for the $10 hosting. Any clue on when a spot opens up?

My server has 80 plugins, running on 2 gigs of ram, most I have ever had was 12 players on at the same time (sucks right xD) and we were running 19.5 TPS... Now with that being said, I optimised my server heavily. (I wrote most of the major plugins myself) I have heard of people getting 20 players per gig without lag, running 50ish plugins.

Wow, make sure to tell him I say thank you. Unfortunetly I'm not really ready to run it yet. I'm still in the planning stage. I probably will need another month. I'll try to get in contact with him then.

Check out ovh hosting, they have treated me well so far. If you don't plan on a large number of players the ssd or cloud plans would probably do the trick for you. Otherwise you can go for the mc32 dedicated server that's about $80 a month and its solid. Probably supports up to 300ish players depending on your setup.

Just so you have another option, I'd just like to let you know that TigerNode provides high performance Minecraft servers for just $3/GB. You can start with 4GB, then upgrade if you need it as your server grows. We also have an awesome sale running, so you can either use LAUNCH50 for 50% off your first month, or LAUNCH25 for 25% off recurring (life of product). Let me know if you have any questions!

Regards,
Dylan H.

I suggest you run around 8-9 gigabytes of ram, and depending on what you would like: a single server or a bungee, for a single server i'd recommend going with https://shockbyte.com/ as it is cheap, and high quality from my experience, and for bungee you would need quite a budget, but i'd go with a dedicated server.
