Yeah I get that. But I'd like to rent some hosting out. Not as a hosting company just some cheap hosting for someone and I'm really interested in servers :p[DOUBLEPOST=1539464948][/DOUBLEPOST]
Is it slow or do you need it 24/7?
24/7[DOUBLEPOST=1539465003][/DOUBLEPOST]And it's kinda slow as it has alot of background processes which works find when playing on it but it's not best for hosting 24/7

If you're doing it out of a passion buy some cheap second-hand hardware off of eaby would be my advice. Their chargeback feature is really nice if it isn't mission critical software.

I'd do some research for what kind of server you need for what you're interested in. E.G is it clock speed or cores that's more important.

On the operating system side of things I wouldn't worry too much as you can obviously install whatever you want on it since it will be your own box. But personally I would recommend getting comfy with the linux side of things as it is a great skillset to have.

If you're just looking at running MC servers I would genuinely recommend just buying a cheap host since it is already set up and it just works and renting it out each month isn't that expensive anyway.[DOUBLEPOST=1539465651][/DOUBLEPOST]

However if you want to buy a server and are okay with second hand look for something like this.

If you want physically host a server, take in the costs for the electric bills, hardware failure / replacements etc...
If you want to pay monthly/quarterly/yearly then the costs are not that massive but you will be limited on most things but you will get support.
If you want to use eBay (I do) you might get few deals but there goes the case, anyone could cancel the service at anytime. Losing access to files etc... Backups could take space and bandwidth as it's limited.

I wouldn't home host if you're planning on making a public server
