I plan on opening a hosting very soon, however I wanted some advice before I do so.

What will I need?

How much will it cost?

Should be enough Kappa

Depending on all your locations, all licenses and stuff you're looking at $250 monthly.

That also depends on what he is wishing to host, rather that be minecraft, websites, or other games.

Advice #1: Don't do it. there are to many hosts out there.
Advice #2: come up with a good, uniq and easy name (not Minecraft related if you would like to expand someday to other kind of hosting)
Advice #3: I recommend host in America to begin with.
Advice #4: Not to expensive
Advice #5: Have fun i guess :) GL
Adding onto this, most hosts from mcm charge $2-$3/gb, so if you plan to advertise Minecraft hosting here you shouldn't go much higher than that, and don't start with expensive machines that are going to force you to be overpriced so you can profit.

Some host use their own hardware, but if you want to jump into the market you would probably want to start reselling (using other provider's servers).

If you have 10-15k to spend, buy the hardware now, and colocate. Costs a lot now, but would be worth it in the long run.

Tip #1 (Hosting): Starting off, use OVH and resell their software.
Tip #2: Be prepared to make little to no money for the first six months at a minimum of 250$/MO
Tip #3: Hire a developer to build your site and set up everything unless you can set it up yourself

15k is an acceptable budget... a few years ago. Honestly, these days, you need a fair bit of money for expansion. it is a very saturated market. 15k should get you somewhere acceptable if you spend it right though. Don't expect advice for free on how to do that, if people had it they'd do it themselves, yes? This is business.
