I have 5000+ portal blocks from a pigman farm and they are laggy. For large portals, send out the portal blocks as air and play light particle effects if the player can see them- or something like that. Or maybe if a chunk has more than N blocks (configurable), portals with more than M portal blocks (configurable), have their blocks sent as air.
