Hi,

Anyone got some suggestions as to the potential setup I'll be using for a home media (and other, e.g. web, git, etc.) server?
Will mainly be running plex, though.

Currently have the following (where $0.00 is any component my girlfriend is supplying):

I believe a GPU is ideal for Plex servers, but if it's just used for 1080p stuff for a single person an i5 would be probably be fine imo

Pretty sure the i5 should be sufficient for 4k too (notably the integrated graphics!) having talked to someone who work at Plex. Maybe concurrent streams it would suffer on. With that being said, I'm not going 4k any time soon I don't think?

I'm not sure where you are sourcing the i5-10600k from but that price seems a tad high (ik that it is a ppp screenshot). Why not go with the i5-11600K? From what I've seen, it's only marginally more expensive but has better integrated graphics with UHD 750 compared to the 10600ks UHD 630. The boost speeds and thermals are nearly identical too. Just makes sense to me if you are foregoing a dedicated gpu (which is understandable )

Just my two cents worth.

Oh and additionally, it might just be more cost-effective to buy a prebuilt NAS with current market issues.

The only one I'd be willing go with is synology for simplicity, and it's not much cheaper honestly, and limits what I'll be able to do with it.

Keep in mind this is in Australian dollars too, but yeah. I'm going to try from a physical store too, so hopefully I can find it cheaper.

Not a bad idea, ty ^^

I personally would go for a Ryzen set up, as you might want to use it for other reasons other than a plex server (file server, as a dedicated computer in combination as a plex server), and the motherboards are generally much cheaper than Intel's counterparts, though I am in the UK and do not know the US/AU market.

I agree that getting a good GPU would also benefit, you would need to get the Plex Pass to use the dedicated GPU for encoding + transcoding. It is under "Hardware Transcoding" https://www.plex.tv/en-gb/plex-pass/, so might not be the ideal choice if you don't already have a license.

I very much doubt in the current climate of chip shortages this is going to be a viable path. AMD chips and GPUs are currently through the roof with pricing and will just make the project not viable for me.
Transcoding @ 1080p with integrated graphics for 3-4 concurrent streams is sufficient (I won't be sharing with many people).
The intel chip will also sufficiently handle other server stuff, though the issue that will be cores I think at the end of the day, which any affordable AMD CPU also lacks (6 cores atm).
Thanks though :)

Fair. It's the complete opposite for us in the UK, but obviously doesn't help you as it's not your market.

Worth bringing up. Hope you enjoy the set up :)
