I'm saving around $450, which is enough for 450 credits on TOPG, for two weeks.

No, I'm not spending it on YT'ers on McM because most of them aren't even that effective, trading money and playing on other servers makes them saturated.
I've contacted around 20-30 youtubers, all who have ignored my Emails. (Probably not interested.)
So this is why I'm going with a server list.

I believe TOPG for 2 full weeks is more effective than renting out a full day on .org, simply because I get more exposure time.
I run a skyblock server (standalone), and we average around 5-10 players every day, 10-15 peak on weekends.
So far, I haven't spent a single CENT on advertising, (Lists + word of mouth)
Currently, my player retention is around 10-15%. (For every 100 people who join, 10-15 stay for a week or so. Different time zones.)
We've been up for a single month, and I've gotten around $500 in donations... which is telling me I'm doing something right.

Does anyone have any thoughts/experiences about renting TOPG for a full two weeks? Is the exposure really that great for what people make it out to be?

Problem can be is that your retention rate will probably fall, while your players will increase. But it is also dependent on a lot of other factors. I think an hour in the peak times can be VERY effective at getting players, its up to your interesting server and ideas to get what you can out of those players. If you are just another <insert generic server here> then no one is going to buy into your server, but if you have something cool and awesome and different, then a TOPG slot can be of great benefit.

And don't forget, that for half of that time you are renting that 2 week slot it will not be being used to its full potential, as the main players you will be getting on are the American and UK players (who just so happen to sleep).

Just my two cents.

Interesting.
I have an admin who takes over my night shift (He's australian).
While I do admit nothing in my server is "Custom", I provide balanced gameplay with lots of fun perks that are available to everyone, while keeping the system efficient and "User friendly" by having GUI's for nearly everything, and so far, that's what's keeping my players on, as opposed to having everything OP and smashing "custom-coded" features down their throat.
My community is relatively family-friendly, and it's quiet and "chill", with the occasional parkour or maze event here and there.

Wouldn't TopG be available to those in different timezones as well? (Asia, Europe, Australia?)

Yes, but coming from personal experience the effect you will gain from them (versus having a TOPG slot during the american/uk day) will be greatly reduced during that period. Though you are correct, you will still be getting players, just not to the same effect.

One of the problems that we see today is that literally every man, all his kids, his dog and his dogs puppies have a Minecraft Server. So being different is really one of the few ways that you can differentiate yourself from every other damn server out there. Another is a strong community and staff team, welcoming a player into a tight community where they can get to know everyone and cooperate in events etc (which gets exponentially more difficult the bigger you community is and the more players you have) is a great way to attract players from a stream like TOPG.

In many ways, having a server that is just 'good' or 'clean' is not good enough these days. It doesn't have to be epicly custom, but I encourage you to put your own touch on your server, make it different in a way that people want to experience it and play in its awesomeness (or whatever you choose). I'm not bashing your server, as I have never seen it and my analysis of it is based on just what you have said. But "clean and user-friendly <servertype> server" does not exactly elicit feelings of excitement as to getting involved. Hell though, if you market it right, your niche could be a no-bs <servertype> experience, with a core gamemode and without smashing "custom-coded" features and OP items for $$$$ down your communities throat.

You also have to remember that you have about 25 seconds to grab the attention of an average user from one of these sites, who most likely is just looking for a fun factions or prison or <insert server here>, so boring or confusing starts, as well as a negative vibe to your server when they join is never a good way to keep players.

It has always amused me when server owners shout "CUSTOM CODED" in their advertising and banners. Cool, you have a custom plugin or two. But in so many ways it means absolutely nothing, one of which is because I could say I have a plugin that says "Your a noob <3" when I startup the server (in console) and brand myself as custom coded. Its like advertising a garage sale with "custom boxes".

Oh yeah, slight warning, if you think your community is chill now, don't be surprised when during peak hours it becomes a hot flaming mess of madness and destruction :p.

Anyway, gonna go sleep, it's 5am... Night :p

Very informative post.
It's just been a struggle trying to think of ideas that I can code into my skyblock server.
For the most part, I enjoy the community aspect, and I'll definitely work on player retention a bit more.
Thanks for the insight.

Does anyone else have opinions on TOPG as a server list? Or just overall opinions they want to share?
