Hello everyone, I know that hosting a server at home and run a Minecraft server on it is possible. I just want to know if it's possible to hide your home IP to prevent various attack and DDoS.
I have heard about 2 methods:
- First you can use a proxy, you buy a cheap VPS link it's IP to your domain and redirect the cheap VPS to your home server.
- Secondly you can buy something called "DDoS Protection" where they provide you an IP and you can redirect your home server to this IP and people can join through the "DDoS Protection" IP you just bought.

If you have any ideas on how I could do that, comment them below, it will be really appreciated.

PebbleHost
High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

Is there a specific reason why you want it home vs a shared host?

Hosting it at home is definitely not cheaper. As your system is running 24/7, you may expect a small increase in your electricity bill.

But yes, you can get a VPS to tunnel traffic to your home IP. This can cause additionally latency and definitely isn't a bulletproof system to prevent your network from going down.

MC hosting is dirt cheap nowadays. I don't know why you'd bother hosting at home.

First, I can re-use an old computer who have pretty good specs. And running a Minecraft server is not really cheap, you can't host a server on a $10 VPS. You will need at least a $60 dedicated for good performances on a Faction server. And about the electricity bill, it's ridiculous, so I don't really care about it.

It's not as safe at your home, I'm guessing you don't have a cooler rack for your servers and all that jazz

Setting one up at home is cheaper and seems easier but safety wise, it's not.
Both physically and non-physically, if you do not set it up correctly many things can go wrong.

Hosting a minecraft server on an 'old pc' is not a good idea at all, there is a reason not everyone does this. Servers as in the ones you find online via dedi are not just desktop pc. The heat it would cause would cause a fire unless you have the right cooling which you can't do in a desktop pc without spending hundreds.

Plus purchasing the required parts it also a pretty hefty cost
I clearly understand that, I just got an old computer and don't want to waste it. The only thing I would pay for is the electricity and the internet subscription of course. But nothing more, a good dedicated server is around $100/m. I can save up to $100 per month.

I editied my message.
Also a good dedicated server is around $60-75, if you think you are going to get hundreds of players then yes 100+ is needed but even then you would make it back in sales.

My edited post explains the main reason why using a desktop pc is a bad idea

Thanks for you opinion. And I think that you're right. Also, there is a bunch of bad things who can happen. Electricity shutdown, Internet shutdown, fire, ...

Thank you for your answers.

There is a whole community on Reddit about hosting servers at home (homelab) which may help you out.

You can always colocate your machine with a DC and you won't have to worry about it running 24/7 in your home.
Most of the time, home hosting is a disaster.

I hosted my first Minecraft server ever on my desktop. It was a terrible idea that didn’t end well.

Thanks every for those replies, I decided to just buy a dedicated server and to not host it at home. I’m closing this thread.
