To make it clear I'm not looking for hosting companies so don't post your copy and pasted commission asking posts, thanks :) Now to continue with the thread.

I'm completely clueless in the hosting domain  and don't have much experience with it so don't roast me too hard <3. I have an upcoming server that has the possibility of reaching 100 players throughout the first release. I'm wondering what is the go with hosting, shared hosting or a dedi. I would be looking for the following

  • DDOS Protection
  • Great Customer Support (fast response, knowledgeable people )
  • Minimal to no downtime ;)
Location(s)

Undecided of the location as of yet, possibility of running different themed gamemodes in different locations
  • West Coast/East Coast of the United States
  • East Coast of Australia (Melbourne, Sydney)

If anyone could give some insight into the hosting domain and/or suggest hosting companies that would be greatly appreciated

EDIT: Not looking to purchase hosting just want some ideas :)

Hello there! My host has 24/7 support as well as little to no downtime and great DDoS protection! Our plans start at $0.70/month for 512MB and our highest plan is just $8.40/month for 6GB of ram! If you need more ram then you can simply contact us via live chat or support tickets, for more information please visit our website: https://affordableserverhosting.com

We also host a popular server that has had 50+ players on and has a active playerbase, to join the server use the IP: play.survivaluniverse.net

If you have any questions then feel free to let me know!

It's more than possible to go with a shared host and have it work for you. The max players we have seen on a single server in our shared hosting is 325, that said the server did start to lag. The purpose of going with a shared host would be lack of knowledge of dedicated servers and their operating systems. It's easy to go to a site, order the product and be sent login information to a panel.
However, in almost all cases, if you have the budget, some knowledge or can find someone with the knowledge to help you, get a dedicated server. You need to ensure the server you buy will work for your use, you cannot buy some junk AMD and expect it to out perform shared hosting E3's. Just be careful the provider you choose, some will tell you anything to make a sale.

EDIT: I forgot to add, my advised location is East Coast of the U.S, it will allow good ping to both EU and US players.

I like websound.co.uk very much, their customer support is wondeful, 11/10, I swear.
I used around 10 hosting companies and this is the best so far for what you've asked.
Now I use NoLag/FalloutHosting because of their prices and I am still very very happy with them, NoLag has a pretty good response time..

I think OVH would be your best option fam
I totally agree with you.

No...just..no.
Another rando saying OVH is bad. (smh)
OVH is a leader in the industry bud. They have amazing servers with fast speeds all on a budget. The only downside of OVH is their support. All of our (Aquatis) CA servers usually NEVER go down and it can handle all of the pressure we put the machine under. Also, you cant be mad at them for bad support, they are managing 23 datacenters with thousands and thousands of servers at each datacenter. Now before you criticize another hosting check the facts bud.

Now Tide Graphics here are some providers that you should into.

Dedicated Servers:
Ian.D
Cryptoxic
https://www.Zare.com
https://www.Aquatis.host
https://www.Fallout-Hosting.com

Minecraft Servers:
Klanx
https://aquatis.host
$1.50/GB | Use code, "AH2017" for $1/GB for 3 months!

Cryptoxic
http://thefrozenheart.org
$2/GB

Jubble
https://www.wulfhosting.com
$1.50/GB

I always get OVH, Although the Support is let's say terrible, but If you know what you are doing then it is really easy to get around, and for the price you pay you are getting decent machines with decent specs.

This pretty much sums it up. Unless of course, you're wanting to target US, Asia and Australia in which case I'd definitely suggest West Coast.

I think your best options are to simply work out your geographic target market for your server and then filter your options out that way.

If you're targeting Australia then OVH did recently open a Sydney location. I'm more inclined to suggest a dedicated server when you're reaching about 50~ average players. It gives you dedicated resources and the fear that nobody else is hogging the server's CPU which could adversely affect your server.

If you're certain you'll get around that then it's definitely worth the extra cost to get a dedicated server. Nobody will want to donate if your server is laggy and it'll just knock your chances at a good start if the shared host you picked just can't support your player base.
