Is hosting a server in 2022 really worth it? Or is the game too dead?
What would be the best "genre" be? Could a competitive PvP server work today? Or do people gravitate towards a more relaxing sky block experience?
I'm interested in opening a server, there is a lot of questions I do have. If any is interested I'd love a partner.

High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

I've seen this question come up many times, and the answer is always the same.

Minecraft is a competitive space, and the competition is growing bigger by the day. However, as with anything, servers come and servers go. When one genre becomes popular, everybody will jump on it until demand takes a nosedive. Remember the minigame craze of 2013 - 2016? Most of the big players have either shut their doors or vastly downsized their operations. Last year, the Hive shut its doors after being online for 8 years. Once an innovator in what was an upcoming space was forced to compete with strengthening completion and was eventually left behind. Servers come as fast as servers go, and even profitable and successful servers will eventually see their fate.

If you want to take a stab at it, then go ahead. Nobody is stopping you from achieving your dreams as a Minecraft Server owner. If you are willing to learn from your mistakes and dedicate yourself to becoming the best server owner you can be, you will succeed. If you are here to make a quick buck, and you don't care about the server or its player base, then you will be very disappointed.

Is Origin realms a sort of custom-made server?

That's a great point, and it's surprising. The same thing happened to Mine plex, seemed to heavily die out just like the Hive. I guess it's about not staying complacent, always listening to your player base and improving, never settling. Again, another very important key, to be in it to run the server, not to make the money.

I think competitive game modes have unlimited "replayability"

Making servers in 2022 is cool and stuff but getting players is something. Games been a decade old and there are alot of servers and PvP Genre is soo common that I have no idea if people would even leave the most popular PvP servers to play on yours.

Recently people have been doing lifesteal smps and I think making that might be a good choice as people would be interested in it.

Creating Server Minecraft in 2022 is like 50/50. Right Now People in Minecraft especially in Asia (As My Country in), I Realize that player is go down slowly. they lost interest in minecraft after minecraft bubble popped in middle 2020. But if you Have creative idea and good management to creating the Minecraft Server, you can survive and maybe be the next Large minecraft server

I think it's doable. It may be more of a challenge than it was 5 years ago, but Minecraft's current playerbase is willing to invest more (both emotionally and financially) than in the past. I would expect to have strength in community, not in numbers.
