Good evening all,

I'm reaching out to this forum in regards of hosting. I want to ask the community mainly business owners if it's still a profitable margin for selling game servers and shared servers.

If individuals could reply too this thread to express there opinion on this subject that would be fantastic as I'm pretty lost as I have not really been involved in the hosting side of things for quite some time now. If certain individuals could point me in the right direction on what's better i.e purchasing reseller dedicated servers or owning my hardware etc.

Thanks for taking time too read my thread I enjoy to read your comments. :)

Regards,

Server hosting is very competitive, you'd have to look at what makes you stand out, whether that's service wise or price wise. That's the best advice and opinion I have.

Yeah, as zalbus said it is VERY competitive.... its already hard enough to get a focus to stand out so id suggest just having features and being cheap....

Common focuses and why they would fail:

DDoS Protection?
Every random host has path nowadays, plus if people have money they can get bloom with CF-MagicTransit

Cool panel with server splitter, etc?
Already a lot of hosts have it

Being cheap af?
Sure but good luck making money

Tons of locations?
Not a lot of customers and a hassle to maintain but could work....

10/10 Support?
Well... already a lot of hosts offer that and its not very easy to just prove your support is better to new customers...

Smokin fast hardware?
Very hard to keep at a reasonable price... if you dont offer decently cheap people will just get another host... and unless you get 7000 series ryzen's with DDR5 and stuff... well every other host has 5950X at this point.

So yeah very competitive... i dont know what else could make your service stand out......

Hello VoIP,

As a newer hosting company, it's great to see that you're interested in offering game servers and shared servers. While the hosting industry can be quite competitive, there is still a profitable margin to be made if you offer high-quality services at competitive prices.

It's understandable to feel lost if you haven't been involved in the hosting industry for some time; researching industry trends, analyzing your competition, and keeping up with the latest technology can help you stay ahead of the game.

In terms of purchasing reseller dedicated servers or owning your hardware, it ultimately depends on your specific business needs and budget. Owning your hardware can provide greater control and customization options, but it also comes with higher upfront costs. On the other hand, purchasing reseller dedicated servers can offer more affordable options, but you may have less control over the hardware.

Regardless of your choice, offering excellent customer service and reliable uptime is key to building a loyal customer base.

Best of luck on your journey!

Lemme go grab my copy paste real quick:

Alright, there's a lot of pointers I am going to say which you might disagree with or be not strong on, but I do it to anyone who wants to start hosting companies as it lets them decide if it's a good idea after all.

Firstly, you might want to do this as a hobby and something in your free time. Now, I get this, no problems, but I am concerned that you will become another Summer Hoax. A Summer Hoax is when a hosting company starts up, gets clients, you then abandon the idea, then yeet out, and then completely ruins your name and reputation on your company. I would seriously be very careful before you continue. I am being serious. I have watched many people start up hosting companies, yeet, and they get attacked by their clients. I have done this for a long time.

Secondly, you are going to be handling client data, which is extremely data sensitive. You are going to be having clients addresses, names, and all other data. I don't know what laws protect you, but in the UK we have GDPR, and if you have UK clients, and you get a request for data retrieval, deletion or such else, you will need to deal with it in 28 days or the ICO will go for you and the client can sue you thousands. (Realistically.)

Next, you need a registered company to present yourself well. If you aren't going to do this, not everyone needs to be registered, and you don't need to be legally, but will really help you with your reputation and people respecting your brand. It's your choice whether you do this, and you might not even be old enough to be 18 or 21 to even do this.

Then, you have the market. The hosting market is so saturated, you need something to stand out from all the rest. If you cannot stand out from all the rest, good luck getting any clients. You need to bring something new to the table and not copying other hosting companies. Without this, no one will use you as a hosting, as people for example can go to my hosting for like 10 cents for a server lol.

Also, finances. What's your budget? How are you getting your income? If you don't have a reliable source of income, nothing is going to happen. You need at least a good few hundred to get started, and reliably keep yourself afloat while you configure and grow. You aren't going to get services cheap, such as theme designers for your website being a good 200 ish, possibly less if they are nice. You then have my costs, WHMCS's license, theme purchase, addons and plugins for the panel probably, and other expenses... the actual system to host them on.

Finally, you need a dedicated server or VPS to run these bots and other hosting needs. Without this, you can't host anything! You are going to need this from a good hosting provider and reliable, then you need to think of locations if you want to expand and need good specifications also on the actual server such as Intel and AMD CPU's, good memory, storage, etc etc.

There is so many other points as well, including support, staff members, Discord and other social medias, payments and salaries, CEO and management documents, and a ton more. I used to run my own hosting company for 2 years boss, a lot of good hard work...

If you cannot answer any of these reliably, STOP NOW. This is to save you money, clients problems and anything else in the future.
