I used OVH in the past for my servers, its very easy. I would choose that over multicraft any day.

What???

Well your saying how good it can host on an OVH VPS, I want to know if you ever hosted from them.

I hosted from them with less than 20 plugins (less than average amount), on a $24 VPS with even better specs than the ones this guy is getting...

I got a 20 TPS on my server, until 10 players joined... Then it dropped to 5 TPS.

I really don't trust OVH's new "game server" or "vps" options. If you want something reliable from them, then get a dedicated server. OVH has a bad reputation because people either: don't know how to optimize their server; or choose the wrong package for their needs.

Not too long ago I hosted a minigame network on two of OVH's 16GB dedicated servers. It ran using BungeeCord - and each minigame lobby has as little as 256MB of RAM. We could play games with 8 people, no problems.

What I'm trying to say is...
It's all about how you optimize the server (and your network connection).

I have run a server on OVH's VPS's specifically. 65 plugins, on their smallest model, the $4/month one.
And I held 19.8 TPS with a peak of 25 players.

I did it recently as I was moving my server from the SP-64 to the MC-32 and had a few days in-between the end and starting billing cycle.

I was hesitant to say it before because I feel it was not enough of a stress test, now that you've shared your results though, I'm extremely confident in the build of my server! :)
Thanks for sharing your experience!
I'm very suprised their 4 gig VPS actually handled that. I was going to get the

and hope that could hold like around 40 players on a small Spigot 1.8 survival server AND run a website, forums, MySQL and teamspeak server with OVH release 3 (centos 6 with MySQL, php and httpd/apache2 installed) but I'm probably pushing my luck there

You're not :) Allocate 6GB to Minecraft. As long as it's vanilla Spigot without plugins, should be okay.

Thanks, and I was planning to actually use some plugins.

However a 4 gig hosted server was able to handle this fine, so I assume that wouldn't be too much trouble would it?

Boy, that's quite a list of plugins. I don't know whether it would be able to hold 40 players - but it should definitely work on a 6GB server for at least 25 players.

Solistica

Solistica, Please stop! Shattered is no way affiliated to Host-Atom. He just want to recommend Host-Atom for their reliable service and I highly recommend them too. They have fast & reliable support and I got no problems at them.

Shattered just wanted to tell the OP not to use VPS. Each of us has Opinions which we are free to post. I highly suggest if you don't know VPS, then don't use it. I'd rather use Shared Minecraft Hosting (The Good ones that doesn't oversell with good CPU).

To be honest, Solistica You're not helping instead confusing and giving wrong information.
You said the following :
"A VPS is simply a dedicated machine with a few less bells and whistles."

Google says :
"A VPS runs its own copy of an operating system, and customers have superuser-level access to that operating system instance, so they can install almost any software that runs on that OS."

Never head that VPS is a dedicated machine, Much wow to your false information.

If you ever buy a VPS, You need to leave a small amount of ram for OS. Example, If you get 2GB, The 512 MB will be used by OS and the else, you use it. It will be also harder to setup the VPS since you need to setup alot and most of the shared hosting has backup included which they do every 12 hours unlike to your VPS.

If you will ever help somebody, Don't give false information & don't accuse somebody without investigating and proofs.

Thank you guys so much for all of your help.

I have decided to go with a shared host to get on my feet for now, and move on to a dedicated server when I need it. I think this will work best for me so I can understand more of this along the way.

Again, I do appreciate all of your help.

"I don't know anything about servers or their hardware, so I'll just quote Google's definition, anddd if it doesn't match word for word, then I'll call this guy out and give him shit."

Ay man if you want to pay extra for a company to setup a server for you, or for a dedicated, then by all means, go for it, your money not mine. I've figured out a way that works for me.

"A VPS runs its own copy of an operating system (so does a dedicated), and customers have superuser-level access to that operating system instance(exactly like a dedicated), so they can install almost any software that runs on that OS.(which you can do on a dedicated)"
... Not to start the fight back up, but I just want to tell you this ...
Just to straighten everything out, Every machine can run an operating system and software on it, but that doesn't make them the same. A dedicated machine is ALL YOURS. A VPS is a dedicated machine being split into many different 'virtual' machines and SHARED by many users which are given a fraction of the machine.

Dedicated = ALL YOURS
Virtual Private Server (VPS) = SHARED
Its shared host vs shared host.. SHARED VPS HOSTING, AND SHARED MINECRAFT HOSTING, IS THE SAME.
All of that plus the install of multicraft and the license, and maybe paying someone extra money to secure the VPS by changing the ssh ports, etc. A VPS is not the way to go if you are not a linux guy.

SOME EXTRA FEATURES OF A MINECRAFT HOST:
1. It would be cheaper.
2. It will have a proper install of multicraft, and have security measures taken so no worries of your server being hacked.
3. You will be sharing a DEDICATED MACHINE with specifications SPECIFICALLY for minecraft, not something that is for multipurpose and websites. (I would rather be sharing 2 Xeon E-5 processors than 2 cores of a VPS for websites or whatever)
4. A minecraft hosting company will come with support, and OVH doesn't come with Linux support, never mind minecraft.
And some minecraft hosts give out trials of enjin and buycraft, along with web hosting and SQL databases for some of your plugins.

Maybe if you did want to setup a panel and everything for yourself, the reason why people do that is to get off of shared hosting, but they do it on DEDICATED MACHINES which ARE NOT SHARED, a VPS is shared.

To original poster, I am glad you went with shared host.
and to Solistica, I hope this explains why VPS and dedicated are different.

I honestly would consider a VPS a virtual machine leased off to a consumer per their specifications

Good Decision! Dedicated server is the best anyway but you need to setup it alot too :)

  1. Your logo appears pretty damn skewed.
  2. Your active menu item doesn't change when you navigate to different pages.
  3. When pages (other than the homepage) the 'Billing Panel' link does not work.
  4. You're using a nulled version of WHMCS which isn't skinned (other than a link at the top of the page and your logo)
  5. There are numerous spelling and layout errors throughout the site.
  6. Numerous missing pages, for example. 'staff.php'
  7. Your test server subdomain 'test.aknode.com' doesn't resolve to an IP address
  8. You're spamming the forums with the same generic advertisement
Some basic issues I discovered.
Please use this as a buying guide for anyone who is interested in the quoted advertisement. There are many server scams out there, and although I am not necessarily saying that this is a scam, please be wary as I myself have been scammed in the past!
