How do you get rep?

Wondering how to up rep. Do you have to do a deal with someone and then click something saying that it was a good deal for it to go up? Also can you up someones rep without trading with them?

Reputation is given by clicking on the users profile, then "Reputation Overview", and finally hit the "Add Reputation" button.
