Depends on operating system, but in my experience of system administration linux is easier to get shit up and running on it.

Depends on the specs of that machine, if it's already pre-build etc. A few factors that can affect it.

depends on the company and the configuration if it's rapid deploy or custom configuration if it's just rapid deploy it should take 5 to 30 minutes unless there is a verification process it would take more time if it's a custom configurations it takes like from 24 hours to 72 hours :D

While some others here have given decent answers, I'll answer as somebody who sells an awful lot of dedicated servers :p

Basically, provides have a few different mindsets with dedicated servers.

Some will offer instant setup/rapid deploy/fixed config servers that have a fixed, definite hardware configuration. The only thing you will be able to change on these servers is the operating system, RAID (if applicable), IPs, bandwidth, and perhaps port speed. Assuming they actually have stock, your average OS install is going to take 10-20 minutes after payment depending on the system.

Some will offer customizable servers that can be configured to your heart's content in most cases. While you might get lucky and they have one in stock, it's not likely - and many providers still don't carry an on-site stock of hardware, so have to purchase from local vendors/suppliers. This, plus the need to update, build, and test the server, leads to the 24-72 hour setup times common across the industry.

I think this will vary based on the provider. We always carry inventory for anything custom we sell on-site in each of our data centers.

Which goes directly into what I said about providers varying in their mindsets.

We also carry at least a small stock of common RAM, SSDs, and hard drives, but we've generally found ourselves to be in the relative minority - especially among smaller to medium-sized dedicated server providers.
