^ Title, I am interested in starting a server soon as I have saved up some money and I want to ask this question to server owners.

How much would it cost be to start a successful server that would be able to hold around 100 - 150 players. Including all the startup costs, management, advertisement etc.

Drop it down below

PebbleHost
High performance, consistent uptime and fast support. Minecraft hosting that just works.

90% of the cost is usually advertisments, getting to 100 - 150 players is going to be expensive.

Yeah, I done advertising before and It does seem to be expensive especially to get people that are willing to play and pay to obviously make the project profitable. What would you say is the best form of advertising as I have heard that discord is one of the best ones that are cheaper.[DOUBLEPOST=1573512331][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah I got $750 as of right now saved up from doing some side things. Would would be the costs breakdown as in how much would I have to put in each sector.
Hmm.. let's try this. I've never actually owned a server myself but I've looked into owning one and have done the necessary research however don't have the funding myself.
I will put this into an estimation on a list in cost of services.
Advertising: This is going to be a VERY large portion of your cost. I wouldn't post an advertisement unless of course your server is completely perfect to the low amount of advertising you would have at this point but the players that do play the server would probably need to be sufficient enough to entertain them before actually buying advertising.
Development: Are you developing this yourself? Time is money. A developer will likely be quite expensive.
Configurations: Also would tie into the development. Doing this yourself? Custom plugins? Public plugins?
Private Builds: Depends on what server you are trying to start up. EG: Prison, Factions, Skyblock
Hosting: If you need to host a server of 100-150+ players, you may need a dedicated server and those are quite expensive: See hyperlink here: ovh
So yeah.. I need this info to help you further.

I am not looking to do any of the development myself, I know this drives up the costs, however prefer to pay someone $100 or so then have to deal with the stress of it all.

When writing this thread I was thinking of something close to the $500 - $750 mark so yeah.

As I am soon getting a weekend job and do things on the side that make me money I should be able to pull off $750 a month. My plan is to start with one server hope it is profitable and if that works out I want to invest my money in to another project and pay a high quality manager / co - owner to manage the previous project. I personally think that with the right team behind this I would be able to pull this off but also interested to see what more experienced people on mcm think.

Honestly, development is quite expensive. I don't think $100 is sufficient enough. They may ask for a percentage of your earnings or ask for pay by the hour. Development is the most important thing then and will be the highest amount of your cost, most likely. Even more expensive than the advertising. You may not be able to afford advertising due to the high cost of development. The good thing is, however, you wouldn't need to use a dedi before advertising. You can use a hosting that's cheap and efficient for a temporary solution while you don't have many players and while you work on this server you don't have to worry about hosting costs and more-so the cost of building, and development. I do have to warn you, though. There is a lot of servers out there. And you're competing with a lot of servers that are already successful. And you have to consider the risk factor in owning a server. Not trying to put you down, but it's a competitive thing to start up, and you may not get everything you put into the server back into your funding.

Yes the risk factor is something that I am aware of however I think it would be successful as in the past I was a manager for some pretty big servers that were making a lot of money and now I believe I have better knowledge of the insides and out and also mature for this kind of project. Thank you for the help it does really help out a lot.[DOUBLEPOST=1573514205][/DOUBLEPOST]
About a grand about 70% of the money should go to advertisment
$700 on advertising, I don't know that seems like a big chunk out of the budget to be honest. I personally know that for around $150 I can get a pretty good discord ( with people interested in the server ) through forms of discord advertising. Some conventional and some not.

You can easily run a successful server spending $0 on advertising(from experience) you just need a good enough idea.

$1000+, not only this you have to take into account player retention and how you're going to make your server have them stay on it. Most join and leave permanently within an hour. I highly reccomend not starting with a factions server as you need a mass player base in order for there to be things to do, start with survival or skyblock & hire a full time streamer/(s)
