How much RAM do I need?

For those who have experience running a Practice server, or any high player count server how much ram do you really need nowadays?

Here is the hardware I'm working with, how much RAM will I need for a 150 playerbase running Practice?

* DDR3 @ 1600MHz
* Optimized Spigot
* 20 Plugins maximum
* Dedicated

I'd say somewhere in the region of 14-28gb, but as Proudly said, it's probably worth getting more than you need.

Version also matters for this. If your on an older version 15-18, if your on a newer version the 18-21 sounds about right.

Most servers depending on player count and type of server only need around 14GB(Not accounting for overhead) at most provided GC as well as the other main aspects of the server are optimised. Smaller servers can obviously run on much less and servers that have a very large amount of players, plugins etc may need a little more.

Depends on your plugins. I used to work for a server that made their own plugins from scratch, meaning they were able to handle 50+ players on 1 server with just a single gigabyte! Most public servers don't use their own plugins but are instead using freemium plugins from SpigotMC which are optimized poorly and cause a lot of lag. These servers will typically need anywhere from 8 - 16 GB, which can get insanely expensive and is out of most server owner's budgets!

It depends on :

1- Your Server Jar Type , Version ( Ex: Spigot, Bukkit..etc)

2- Your Server Specs (Ram Type DDR3 DDR4, Speed and CPU Performance )

3- Players Connected To Your Server

4- How Many Plugins You Are running

of course you can do some optimizations and configurations to your server so you can reduce ram , cpu usage but these are the main factors
