You may have to live in Canada and (or) have a VPN that is located in Canada.

A registrar can't be that bad. Never used them, but i had clients managing their domains with GoDaddy and from my experience it's not that bad.

I only use NameCheap, but just because something is not best, dosent mean it sucks.

you can transfer to namecheap. I used one of Godaddy's cheap 99 cent domains, transfered it to namecheap with whois guard

you don't have to live in Canada. you just must have a card if you live in US, no paypal if your using it in US.
But otherwise, great method! i used it, and got a good domain.

1and1 is horror... don't use it. I used to use them back in like 2013, I kept buying .99 cents domains, and one day, they decided to charge me $38 for one domain, after 2 months of the initial payment...

Of course I didn't want to pay it, as it wasn't worth it. What did they do? They called me every single, day. Non-stop. I answered and told them to stop calling me, but they wouldn't stop. In the end I had to block them through my phone and send them straight to voicemail...

you don't even need a vpn, I just purchased a canada one and I'm from the uk
