How to start system administration?

I want to start learning how to sys admin but not sure where to start. Can anyone gimme advice, or tips? Thanks!

system administration is learned through time and practice, I suggest taking things a block at a time and learning how to do them. From simple things like installing Pterodactyl to setting up a GRE tunnel, just take it onestep a time until you're confident you've learned the task

please, close this thread, i'm genuinely not trying to be a dick here, but if you can't think for yourself or have the thought process of coming to the conclusion to get a server, then how in the hell are you supposed to figure things out that are undocumented that require you to think for yourself?

If you're looking for a cheap vps to grab and play around with, I recommend instaces from http://vultr.com, they're high quality and billed hourly so it should be great for you to learn with and destroy once you move on to your next project


If you need a dedicated server, I recommend picking up a cheap one from http://hetzner.com/sb

You can learn some things about the Linux command line online:

[Asynchronous]

Maybe you can start with an old computer and try to turn it into an ubuntu server.
Then you can try to setup things such as mysql database, websites, etc.
All of these to learn by yourself. You just need to follow tutorials. And don't worry, even with tutorials, you will have issues and you will need to try to fix them by yourself.
