I wondered the same thing, until in 2016 a friend told me what happened because he met the guy on Hypixel/some server and asked him himself.

Mojang used to swap names for you. If you had 2 accounts, both with TID, you would have to contact them, provide both TIDs and they would swap names. Examples of people who did this are “King” and “Apple”. The proper way to do it with minimum name changes is: Change “Name A”, Change “Name B” to “Name A”, then claim “Name B” on the original account. “King” was done perfectly but “Apple” could’ve been done with a name change less.

Anyway, “JohnCena” wanted to do this, but Mojang somehow fucked up the process and they changed his name too many times. So he contacted them about it and they just decided to wipe the name history from the database, I assume as an apology. “JohnCena” obviously used to have a different name originally.

Mojang ended name swapping sometime in late 2015 at the request of Marc.

Now that’s why Mojang back in the day was so much better and down to Earth than it is today. They were willing to listen to normal people who played and help them out. Nowadays they could care less and would automatically assume you’re trying to do something wrong if you asked them to switch names on accounts.

Minecraft has always been filled with hackers and skids. Go back and look at groups like Team Avolition.
