I united these but when I put on a stroke there's a line that goes right down the middle

It means that they are not a single shape at the moment. Your effort to unite them did not work. Use shape builder tool and click inside one side and drag the cursor to another, it mostly works. If it does not, press CTRL + Y to enter into outline mode and see if your shapes are overlapping at least with each other or not. I hope this helps.
