The school shooting in florida has definitely not gone unnoticed, however I think people are blowing things out of proportion, and I wanted to clarify what should be done, and what needs to be done in regards to this issue. This is mostly my opinion, so I want to know what you guys think too! Please do let me know in the replies.
From what I can tell, everyone wants to arm teachers, and give them guns to assure they can fight back in the situation of another of these shootings. While I do believe that arming teachers would help, here is why it wouldn't work.
Teachers are people too! If you were given a gun, a bit of training, and told to kill someone that you more than likely knew, would you do it without hesitation, or would you freeze up? Would you be able to indiscriminately end lives in order to save others?
Teachers being armed wouldn't do anything but create unnecessary mental trauma for the victims (Those involved) of the shooting.
Even if you were to shoot, and kill would you be able to mentally bear with that burden? Teachers could easily get PTSD from these situations especially because most teachers are... Middle aged females! You think they have the mental fortitude to kill on command?
A smarter solution would be to provide them with a method of protection in the form of a bulletproof vest, and some form of non-lethal disabler, such as Pepper-Spray, a Taser, or even something like a sound grenade.
If someone knew every teacher was packing a taser that would turn off a lot of shooters that don't want to get zapped. That would create a safer atmosphere for the children involved.
Sure if you lightly armed teachers you might see some cases of teachers using these devices on children arise, but how often would that be compared to a shooter? As well, if a teacher tasers a child, the teacher next door would more than likely hear the shouts from the students that had just witnessed this, and go check it out.
The point of this is, we should arm our teachers, but not with deadly weapons.
