So I'm interested in starting up or buying a server, but I don't know if it's still worth doing. It'd be more for fun than profit but obviously profit would still be important as Minecraft servers cost money.

Well if you purchase a server with a player base that is active I would say yes, But in the sense of from scratch depending on the server type I feel like it would be a lot of investment + alot of hard work required

Yeah I'd probably be more likely to just buy a server with a small playerbase and hire some streamers perhaps.

^Agreed^

Making a server is a tough business, it either gets 10 players and you waste hundreds of dollars or it goes viral and you cover your costs, just play smart and target the right communities . also, be unique. It's a situation that I can't answer, if you're new to managing a business, then no, do not make a server, but if you know how to deal with people and how to build a server on budget properly then yeah, go for it.

Seems like everyone is saying it's worth it to make a server because Minecraft isn't dead entirely yet. Honestly, like let's be as blunt as possible, is it really "worth" it to make a server now? Let's first clarify two things, you are going to need a ton of money to get yourself out there and there's an extreme amount of competition. Like if we're being realistic, it's not one bit worth it to make a Minecraft server now with the risk. You just have such a high chance of failing now opposed to like a couple years ago. Plus, if you don't have at least $1k+ the chance of your server doing really good is extremely unlikely. I'm willing to bet now I'm gonna get some people responding to say that they made their server do well without tons of money. Okay, want a cookie? Let's just face the facts, Minecraft isn't what it used to be. It's not worth it to make a server.

Honestly, making a good server with 500$ isn't hard at all, the thing is, who are you gonna sponsor? barely any YouTubers out there are willing to play some random MC server for under 200$

You literally just explained why you can't get a server popular now with only $500... I even said you need at least $1k+ to get yourself out there and past the competition to some degree so. idk what to say you basically just disclaimed your claim by saying barely any Youtubers will play some random MC server for under $200.

I'm just saying there are barely any good youtubers for minecraft anymore, people target the wrong communities, that's why servers fail.
