Hello! I'm coming to the community asking, if Severs are still a profitable business model? If so, what's the basic run down of what's needed.
Budget, Best Gamemodes, etc.

Depends on your goals. What would make it "worth it" to you?

Fame? Fortune? Hanging out with a few friends on the weekends?

Everyone defines success differently. You said "profitable" but what does that mean? Do you want to make $5 profit or $5k/month? If you know what your goal is there might be different answers for you and different paths to get there.

To put it in the most simple way, I think that most people don't make servers purely for profit. I think a huge factor of making a server is enjoyment and building a community as well as actually playing. However in terms of business, I believe that high quality servers with money put into the correct things (like builds, plugins, advertisement) can make a good amount of profit. For you to be super profitable your server has to has to be excellent. Most servers that are just good, but have players will likely be able to sustain its cost if there are the right things to be purchased and supported. Budgets can go in varied directions honestly, but I would see if you can make some money and work with what you have. I don't know specifics about the most popular gamemodes, but I would assume it would be things like skyblock, prison, and survival servers. Again take what I say with a grain of salt because there are tons of more experienced people on this platform than me, but I hope this helps!

If your goal is purely profit, then don't make a server, you will most definitely fail if making money is your main reasoning behind it

I completely agree with Undefined., to make a server you must actually want to have a community based environment not just a massive pay2win environment where your only goal is to retain revenue or a profit. I've seen servers go under because of the sheer greed from the ownership/management team. My suggestion to you would be figure out your goals/priorities for the server and then decide whether or not they are obtainable and then either move forward with your idea or just halt it all together. To make a server you want to actually care for the community and listen to what they want and not just use it as one big money grab.
