Hello MC-Market,

I would love to start a new server which will be completely custom made by me.
However, is it still worth my time and investments?
I am planning on making a skyblock server with a big twist.

I would appreciate some general thoughts :)

Thanks all,

peace;

If it's really exclusive, new gamemode idea, yes.
If not, don't even think about this.

If your able to make it very exculsive it can pay off. Though if you make it like almost every other server then it wont pay off.

Good luck on the server

Custom gamemodes are amazing to play, espacially when they are something PvP related. If I recommend you to start as a server with a custom gamemode, no. You'll need a very big budget, very big. Because a YouTube fanbase doesn't try out new gamemodes, they don't even try to play another gamemode, so why would they come to a custom gamemode. Basically, they don't. Though, if you start something like factions, or maybe skyblock. Try to create a custom gamemode which is a bit similar like skyblock or factions and advertise them both. I wouldn't recommend it, it costs a lot and you'll not receive what you have expected. If you have a decent playerbase, you can consider it to create a custom gamemode.

I feel like starting off with a revolutionary idea is a bad idea. It puts a lot of pressure on you and the tiniest mistake could throw it off. Make a game mode that you know works and add a little twist to it. Make it fun and exciting. Once you have a player base, then try expanding.

As for is it profitable, yes. Although it depends on the decisions you make. I have seen really good and original new servers that look like they could go somewhere and then make a management mistake that destroys everything. I have also seen a server owner make the same server three times in a row and mess them all up with management decisions and walk away with 30 grand. It is all how you play it.

I wish you luck, and if you need any help, let me know!

I agree with itsdonut on this one, it's best to start off with a twist on an existing gamemode, then expanding your own ideas into it.
Right now, its the most difficult to effectively maintain a server financially (not technically!) that it's been since official release, due to the huge number of servers out there.
However, with the bedrock edition Marketplace, there's going to be some changes to what's allowed under the EULA (not an official statement, just an educated hunch). This might open up a lot of space for servers.

Honestly, it feels like it's only worth it if you make a solid server worth showcasing by youtubers. You need to pay a lot of money in advertisement to go big. I doubt you can get a popular server nowdays by just making a really good and unique server without any investment in advertising.

But if the server turns out playable, and you pay the right youtubers, then be my guest! It's fun, great experience, and you probably might not regret it. Just don't give up if players aren't joining instantly. Be patient!

Hey,

You just need an unique idea with a lot of advertisment.
People love to have a non-toxic server & something extremely unique such as the server 'WynnCraft'.
That's a good example of an unique server.

Good luck!

Agreed. From servers I’ve been on, usually skyblock/factions, the players spend money like crazy, and don’t care about anything besides that specific game mode. It’s weird how they aren’t usually willing to try new things, but convenient for people just starting a server.

I am very in the middle on this.
While it can be rewarding, you would need lots and lots of money. i'd say you guys a general outline for the server, some good staff who are dedicated, and work on a often seen gamemode with a twist, that's addictive and enjoyable. If you go through with this and need help hmu.

Too many people say no because they are scared of failure. Go ahead man, go for it. I think it’s important to do it with the basis of loving the game rather than just seeing it as a source of dollar signs. Do it cuz you love the game, not the money. Goodluck!
